Identification
Adults can reach a length of 19 cm. Very slender cylindrical body with elongated head and tube-shaped mouth. Entire body covered with wide dark red and white transversal bands. Tail fin red with white spot and white edges on sides.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Lives in lagoons, outer reef slopes around caves and crevices, down to 56 meters.

Status : The species’ status is very difficult to assess. It is probably the most often collected pipefish species for the aquarium trade.
