Identification
Adults can reach up to 8 cm in length. Coloration is bright blue with small black stripes on flank scales. Males have yellow –orange mouth, pelvic fins and tail. Females have transparent fins and blue mouth.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, from Indonesia to south Japan, to Australia, east to Samoa, Vanuatu and Micronesia. Lives mostly in clear and shelter lagoons, in coral reefs, down to 10 meters.

Status : The species is very common in the wild but may be locally declining because of overexploitation for the international trade.
