Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 30 cm. Very long and thick tail. Skin is warty. Coloration mostly brown to grey-brown on back, becoming beige with black spots on belly. Fairly large eyes and mouth.
Range and habitat
The species is found in south-western Europe, mostly in central and southern Spain and in coastal plains of northern Morocco. Found in slow-moving rivers, lakes and marshes, up to 1600 meters

Status : The species is declining in parts of its range (such as Spain) because of pollution and degradation of swamps and other aquatic habitats.
