Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 15 cm. Laterally compressed body with protruding snout. Dull yellow to gray body with thin diagonal lines forming chevrons. Black band on face. Large white-edged black spot on tail peduncle.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Western Atlantic ocean from the coasts of Massachusetts to Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, Caribbean sea and Venezuela. Lives in shallow rocky and coral reefs, down to 20 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN

Status : The species has a fairly large range and remains at least locally very common. No declines have been noted during the last decades.
