Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 15 cm. Dorsal and anal fins are dark violet, caudal fin yellow. Body flame orange with violet dots all over head and flanks. Belly and sometimes back half of body violet with dark blue spots.

Range and habitat
This species is found in the northern subtropical Pacific Ocean around Japan, north to Tokyo and east to Hawaii. Lives in rocky shores and reefs with moderate coral growth, from 12 to 60 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a fairly small range but occurs in deep waters which makes it difficult to trap for aquarium trade. It seems to remain safe so far.
