Identification
Slender-bodied viper with prehensile tail, reaching a total length of 85 cm. Broad triangular head with two prominent horns above eyes. Coloration highly variable, from pure golden yellow to gray, mottled green or brownish-red.

Range and habitat
This species is endemic to central America, being found from the isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico south to Costa Rica, Panama and small parts of Colombia. Lives in lowland and montane wet forests, cloud forests and plantations.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN (as B. schlegelii)
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has been split from B. schlegelii in 2024. It has the largest range of the species complex and is likely the least threatened at this time. However, local declines and even extinctions have been noted because of habitat loss.
