Identification
Large species, growing up to 27 cm long. Superficially similar to S. rubrum and S. praslin with which it is often confused, especially in captivity. Coloration from bright red to very dark red with broad longitudinal red bands separated by thin white bands (thinner than for the other related species). Presence of black blotch on tail peduncle at the end of the red bands, additional two blotches on dorsal and anal fin bases but their size can vary. Thin white edges on pelvic and anal fins with black streak near anal fin edge.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from Indonesia (Java) to Solomon Islands and Great Barrier reef, north to Sabah (Bornean Malaysia) and Philippines. It inhabits outer reef slopes and drop-offs near caves, in coral-rich areas, from 6 to 40 meters deep.
