Identification
The species grows to 7 cm long. Juveniles are bright yellow with blue snout, forehead and upper back. When growing up, the blue becomes darker and the yellow turns to greenish-yellow or even grey. Wavy vertical lines, sometimes criss-cross lines on flanks due to darker flank scale edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs patchily in the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, from Mentawai archipelago (Indonesia) to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. It is found in slightly turbid waters around lagoons and costal reefs, down to 10 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range and remains common. It is facing threats such as habitat loss and trapping for the aquarium trade but their impact are minimal so far.
