Identification
Adults can reach a length of 63 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg. Easily recognized by its black bill with yellow tip. Almost no orange at bill base. Grey-white head with black cap and eye stripe. Rest of body grey with black spotting. Smaller.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Assam to South China, Vietnam and Indochina. Species also found throughout India, from the Indus valley (Pakistan) to Assam. Lives in inland and coastal shallow-waters wetlands with dense vegetation cover.

Status : The species is globally common in the wild although some populations have been declining because of hunting pressure and habitat loss.
