Identification
Adults can reach a length of 16 cm. Stout and flat body with triangular head. Warty skin. Coloration dark brown to almost black with a series of orange wart-like glands on each flanks. Orange ridge on tail. Orange feet.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in far-eastern Asia and is endemic to 6 islands of the Japanese archipelago. Previously known from Taiwan but now extinct there. Lives in forests, grasslands, swamps and areas with humid substrate.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix III
Status : The species is permanently declining because of habitat degradation. Its range is now very tiny and highly fragmented. Still illegally collected.
