Identification
Adult females can reach 21 cm in length for a weight of 156 g when breeding. Males are smaller and lighter. Head brown and white, facial disc brown striped with white. Breast white with brown mottling. Brown wings.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in North America, from Alaska to most of Southern Canada, North USA, then from western USA to Mexico. Lives in woodlands, mostly in coniferous forests, up to 2500 meters.

Status : The species remains fairly common throughout its range but is globally declining because of intense logging activities, especially in Canada.
