Identification
Adults females can reach about 11 cm in length, males are smaller. Large toad with blunt and short nose. Coloration brown to gray-brown with darker (dark brown to brown-green) blotches on back and head. Longitudinal bar on flanks.
Range and habitat
The species is found in North America from south-west Canada (south Alberta) to most of western USA, south to north-west Mexico. Lives in grasslands and flood plains with damp loose soil. Rarely in arid areas.

Status : The species is locally very common and most of its populations are safe so far. Local declines due to human settlement expansion can be noted.
