Identification
The largest Madagascar boa species with females reaching up to 3 meters in length, males being smaller. Shinier and brighter colored than A. dumerili. Head reddish-grey, body gray-brown to reddish with dark and clear blotches.

Range and habitat
This species is endemic to Madagascar and occurs in the central, northern and western parts of the island. Mostly occurs in open woodlands, particularly in dry deciduous forests.

Status : The species is still common within its range. It was previously listed as Vulnerable because of trapping of wild specimens and habitat degradation.
