Identification
Long and curved orange bill. Black wings and tail with white spots, yellow breast and belly, black band on breast, black crown, white ear patch. Subspecies with mostly red face.

Range and habitat
East Africa, subspecies occurs from central Kenya to north-central and northeast Tanzania. Found in open woodlands and wooded grasslands on uneven terrain with termitaria, to 2130 m.

Status : The species is widespread and reasonably common. Nests are robbed in some areas and birds (especially nominate subspecies) are captured for local and international trade.
