Identification
Short thick black bill. Female brown with brown bill. Male dark slaty grey with grey-edged black wing feathers. Rich chestnut-brown chin, breast and belly, grey flanks. White spot near bill base.
Range and habitat
South America, from central Colombia to north and central Bolivia, east to central Brazil, north again to Guianas. Found in grassy and shrubby clearings, gardens and cultivated fields.

Status : The species has a very large range where it is common and widespread. It is expanding its range to man-made habitats as long as enough feeding resources remain.
