Identification
Upright roundish body with large head, grey legs. Subspecies with black head and brown cap, green plumage with blue wing patch and large red area from vent to belly with very little black

Range and habitat
Subspecies breeds from north India to south China and south Thailand, migrates to Malaysia, Sumatra and Java. Found in riverine forests, old gardens and plantations, to 1000 m.

Status : The species is widespread and locally common. Some populations (Java, India …) are declining because of habitat loss. This subspecies is often caught for the trade and for food.
