Identification
Males antlers are large, curved and with very few ramifications. Fur usually dark brown with clearer (beige) legs. Black muzzle. Furry and short black tail with white underside. Distinctive mane.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Mainland Malaysia, on Sumatra and nearby islands. Found in lowland and montane forests, woodlands and savanna woodlands. Very adaptable.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is declining very fast due to hunting and habitat loss. In some areas, local extinctions are predicted. Very few conservation measures are in place at this time.
