Identification
Males have long curved forward-pointing antlers. Fur is dark brown on back with white spots, flanks more chestnut-beige to rich brown. Tail underside, throat and inside of ears white.
Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to central India, occurring between the Ganges and Godavari rivers. Found in open sal forests with grass undergrowth and nearby grasslands.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is highly threatened by hunting and loss of habitat. Populations are very fragmented now and no real conservation assessment has been made since 2014. Bred in captivity.
