Identification
The species grows to 68 cm in length for a weight of 1,4 kg. Brown-grey wings, dark tail, dark grey face, brown crown. Subspecies nearly crestless, with beige breast with clear brown blotches and black vertical streaks.

Range and habitat
Subspecies breeds in south Russia, north-east China and Japan, winters in southeast Asia. Species also found from India to Indonesia and Philippines. Lives in dense forests, woodlands, small forest patches near villages, to 3000 m.

Status : The species is still locally common but likely declining because of loss of habitat and food sources through poisoning and use of pesticides.
