Identification
Broad and large whitish bill with two tooth-like projections on upper mandible. Upperparts and head black, broad white eyering. Breast and belly dark red. Broader red wing-bar for this subspecies.

Range and habitat
West Africa, subspecies found from Guinea-Bissau to central Cameroon. Occurs in forest understorey near forest edges and clearings, cultivated areas, gardens, to 2300 m.

Status : The species is common and widespread. It occurs in many protected areas within its range and can adapt to a broad variety of habitats as long as enough tall trees remain.
