Identification
The species grows to 33 cm in length for a weight of 260 g. Black cap, yellow eyes, dark orange bill, green wings. Rest of plumage bright red and dark blue. Subspecies with most violet on breast, sides of head and belly.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found in west Papuan islands and Vogelkop Peninsula. Lives in lowland and hill forests, freshwater swamps, to 1600 m.

Status : This species has a large range and, although uncommon in the wild, remains safe and one of the commonest big lories within its range. Commonly traded but not often bred in aviculture.
