Notes : No subspecies known.
Identification
Very long thin snout (nearly as long as rest of body). Black forehead and top of head, whitish snout and cheeks. Rest of body bright yellow with rows of faint dots on lower half of flanks.
Range and habitat
Indo-Pacific, from east Africa to Hawaii and Pitcairn islands, to south Japan and New Caledonia. Found around seaward coral reefs, sometimes at great depths.

Status : This species is widespread but has experienced local declines. Causes are unclear but research is needed to establish whether the species depends on live corals for its survival or not.
