Identification
Very large woodpecker with long and thick black bill, yellow eyes. Plumage shiny black with cream to white belly and thighs. Red forehead, crown and chin for male, red crown only for female.
Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from south Myanmar to Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo and nearby smaller islands. Found in evergreen and deciduous forests with large trees, to 2500 m.

Status : Very wide ranging species but occurs in low densities and declining in many parts of its range because of deforestation. Some subspecies (Cebu, Japan) are now extinct.
