Identification
Adults can reach 28 cm in length (average) for a weight up to 700 g. Long and naked pinkish tail, elongated nose forming a mobile proboscis. Fur coloration is black except from first third of body and head bright golden-red.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-eastern Kenya and north-Eastern Tanzania in East Africa. Also found on Zanzibar Island. This subspecies occurs in the mainland African part of the species’ range. Lives in woodlands, forests and scrublands with important leaf litter.

Status : The species is threatened in the wild because of fragmentation and destruction of its habitat by expansion of human settlements and agriculture.
