Identification
Adults can reach 82 cm long for a weight of 1,9 kg and wingspan of 1,50 m. Black morph with dark bill known but normal coloration is light brown, white breast and belly with vertical rows of black spots. Subspecies crestless and darker.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found from North India and Nepal to Vietnam, south to Malaysia, western Indonesia and Philippines. Species also found in India, Sri Lanka and to Andaman Islands as well as Simeulue Island. Lives in forest edges, savannas, plantations, to 2000 m. Avoids dense forests.

Status : The species is widespread but more and more uncommon. Insular populations are especially threatened because of habitat loss.
