Identification
The species grows to 58 cm for a weight of 830 g. Long black crest on nape. Wings dark brown. Neck and face black, yellow eyes, white throat. White breast with vertical lines of black spots. Belly with narrow black and white horizontal stripes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Southeast Asia, from south Thailand and Malaysia to Sumatra, Simeulue, Nias, Belitung and Mentawai Is. Also north and central Borneo. Lives in primary mountain evergreen forests, from 500 to 2000 m.

Status : The species is globally uncommon and is likely in overall decline because of long term deforestation in all of its range.
