Identification
The species grows to 61 cm long for a weight of 800 g. Head, nape, wings, back and tail slaty-grey to black. White chin, breast and sides of neck. Rich chestnut belly, vent and thighs. Black streaks on breast and belly. Subspecies darker.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found from Myanmar and Hainan to Malaysia, western and central Indonesia and Philippines. Species also occurs in Nepal, India and Sri Lanka. Lives in moist deciduous and evergreen forests, secondary forests, to 2000 m.

Status : The species is relatively common in parts of India but getting much rarer in Indonesia and Philippines because of deforestation.
