Identification
Adults can reach up to 53 cm in length for a weight of 1 kg. Bright red bill with clear tip. Plumage mostly chocolate brown with grey cheeks, black belly and undertail, clear wings. This subspecies grey lower breast and clearer wings.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs found from Panama to east Peru, west to North Argentina. Species also occurs from south Arizona and Texas to Panama. Lives in tropical lagoons, lakes, swamps, with tree cover, near agricultural land.

Status : The species is very common to abundant in most of its range. Some local declines have been noted because of habitat loss and hunting.
