Identification
Adults grow to 24 cm. Long white fin rays. Body with five broad dark brown vertical bands separated by white lines. Tail peduncle lighter brown with horizontal white lines. Pink-beige face with white-edged oblique dark brown eye-band.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Gulf of Aden and East Africa to Society Islands, north to south Japan, south to New Caledonia. Lives in rocky areas of coral reefs, from 1 to 30 meters deep.

Status : The species is widespread. It is caught occasionally for the aquarium trade but no significant population declines have been noted.
