Identification
Adults can grow to 84 cm. Adults are grey-white with numerous black spots on most of body except white belly. Dark fins. Juveniles white with large black blotches on upper back and variable black dotting. Black vertical band on face.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Seychelles to Society islands, north to South Japan, south to Lord Howe island. Lives in lagoons and seaward reefs, from 3 to 50 meters deep.

Status : The species status has yet to be assessed but it has a fairly large range. It is locally collected for trade and caught by fisheries.
