Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 50 cm. Forehead slightly rounded, large eyes. Coloration olive-grey to brown, turning white on belly. Orange to red patch on opercle. Checkered pattern on flanks with thick horizontal dark bands.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to Marquesas islands, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Lives around outer reef slopes, in sand and rubble areas, from 10 to 160 meters deep.

Status : The species has a wide range and is heavily fished. Fisheries management programs are being implemented to prevent declines.
