Identification
Adults can grow to 125 cm in length. Wide head with very numerous barbels on upper lip. Coloration usually cream, beige and brown with network of reticulated black lines. The tail fin is often held curved on one side.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Eastern Indian Ocean, from New Guinea to northern Australian coasts (from Ningaloo Reef to Bundaberg). Lives in coral reef areas on continental shelf and offshore, to 50 meters deep.

Status : The species remains quite common within its range and part of its habitat is protected. Vulnerable to coral reef destruction in some areas.
