Identification
Adults can grow to 83 cm in length for a weight of 12 kg. Slightly humped forehead. Coloration bright red with duskier red back and tail fin. Pink to light blue dots on flanks, forming dashes. Broad yellow edge to caudal and pectoral fins.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Pitcairn islands, north to south Japan, south to Australia. Lives in clearwater coral reefs, from 15 to 250 m deep, mostly around islands.

Status : The species has a huge range and is locally targeted by fisheries, causing some declines such as in Maldives and Mariana islands.
