Identification
The species can grow to 83 cm maximum length for a weight up to 2,5 kg. Elongated snout and nearly straight forehead profile. Coloration is silvery with more or less visible golden tinge. Dark-edged flank scales, yellow tinge to tail fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in southern Asia, in the southern half of India and around Sri Lanka. Lives in cool fast-flowing rocky streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

Status : The species’ status is difficult to assess as there are wild populations that could be threatened and introduced populations that are thriving.
