Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 97 cm for a weight up to 100 kg. Males bigger than females with large round cheek flanges and small brown beard. Fur is long and sparse, much darker brown than P. abelii. Very dark subspecies.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in northeast Borneo, in the Malaysian state of Sabah and nearby north and east Kalimantan (Indonesia). Species endemic to Borneo. Lives in primary lowland and swampy dipterocarp forest and forest mosaic, to 500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is declining at an alarming rate because of habitat loss (forest fires, conversion for plantations), fragmentation and poaching.
