Identification
The species grows to 49 cm in length for a weight of 2,7 kg. Humped back, concave forehead and upturned mouth. Coloration silvery-cream to olive-yellow with numerous black spots on body. Darker head. Fins yellowish and spotted.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from Texas to Florida, and north to most of the eastern half of USA and nearby south-east Canada. Lives in lowland large warm lakes, reservoirs and backwater of rivers.

Status : The species has a very large range and is locally common to abundant. Some populations could be declining, more data is needed.
