Identification
Body length of 95 cm, tail length to 60 cm, weight up to 30 kg (usually less). Males are silvery to ashy grey with a huge mane and cheek tufts. Bright red bare patches on rump, dark pink-red face. Female duller and browner than males.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa, in most of the eastern half of Ethiopia, extreme north Somalia and southern Yemen in Arabian Peninsula. Lives in arid subdeserts, steppes and mountain slopes, up to 3300 m.

Status : This species is common and its numbers are increasing since it has less predators than before and can thrive close to big cities.
