Identification
The species grows to 15 cm in length. Slender body, coloration from black to olive-grey with dark bar on snout and dark blotch on tail peduncle. All fins are bright red with no dark edges. Dorsal and pelvic fins start on same vertical plan.

Range and habitat
The species is native to southeast Asia, being found in most big river basins from Thailand to Laos, Cambodia and extreme west Vietnam. Lives in rivers and tributaries, moves to marshlands, flooded plains and forests.

Status : The species is probably still numerous in the wild but it is threatened by habitat loss and pollution in most of its range.
