Identification
Adults can reach 18 cm in length. Fairly long body, gently sloping forehead. Coloration mostly silvery white with thin (thicker near back) forward oriented blue-black chevron-shaped lines. Black tail fin with yellow edge, yellow dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and Society Islands, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Islands. Lives in areas of rich coral growth in lagoons and seaward reefs, to 30 meters deep.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a very large range but is experiencing declines because of its total dependence on a few species of stony corals for its survival.
