Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 30 cm. Juveniles white with brown and black back. Adults from light grey-olive to dark brown. Throat and belly often dark blue, tail yellow with broad white edge not crossing tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area from the Persian Gulf and East Africa to Samoa, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in reef areas, from silty lagoons to outer reefs, down to 30 meters deep.

Status : The species seems to be quite common within its large range. Occasionally collected for the trade.
