Identification
The species can grow to 40 cm. Juveniles brown-black with dark-edged white round blotches on whole body. Adults with small white dots forming streaks on flanks and clear poorly-defined clear blotches on dark-brown background.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, patchily, from east Africa to Tonga, south to Australia, north to Ryukyu Islands. Lives in inner coastal and lagoon reefs, sometimes brackish waters, to 25 m.

Status : The species is widespread but often targeted by fisheries, especially when it forms spawning aggregations. This can be a long term threat.
