Identification
The species grows to 30 cm in length, probably larger. Body covered with orange-beige spots. Broad transversal dark brown bands splitting on belly and reaching up to dorsal fin, forming two distinct dark areas on fin. Head often darker.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from the coasts of Vietnam and north Borneo to Philippines, South China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and south Japan. Lives in shallow rocky areas of bedrock with boulders, from 15 to 30 meters deep.
