Identification
Adults reach 15 cm in length. Slender body with long tail fin. Coloration usually mottled orange-red to yellowish, indistinct vertical lines on head. Dorsal fin with dark red to brown blotch and small appendages on each rays.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to Tonga, north to south Japan, south to Australia and northern New Zealand. Lives in steep slopes of coral reefs, exposed to currents, from 10 to 132 meters.

Status : The species has a huge range. It is dependent on coral reefs for its survival and this could become a long-term threat.
