Identification
Adults can grow to 15 cm in length. Coloration light creamy-beige with fading vertical rows of dark dots on upper flanks. Broad black band from forehead to eyes and cheeks. Black tail peduncle, black coloration leaking to back of anal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from US coasts to northern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean islands, south to central Brazil. Lives in coral and rocky reefs, from 5 to 92 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a wide range and is locally very common. Collection for the aquarium trade and habitat loss are possible long-term threats.
