Identification
The species grows to about 30 cm in length. Straight forehead, slightly concave upper back. Dorsal fin with extended tip. Coloration greenish-olive to beige or light grey with intricate pattern of thick broken horizontal black lines and dots.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in western Pacific Ocean area, from Hokkaido Island in Japan to the eastern coast of China, south to Taiwan and Hong Kong. Lives in shallow weedy and rocky reefs, sandy bottoms nearby, down to 100 meters.

Status : The species has a small range and is locally harvested in an unsustainable way, particularly in Korea where steep declines have been observed.
