Identification
Adults can grow to 50 cm. Easily identified by its slightly bulbous forehead and deep body, forming a distinct hump on the back. Coloration red to grey, often with pronounced orange tinge, especially near cheeks. Clear tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and east Africa to the Society and Line Islands, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Mostly found around coral reef areas, to 150 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is widespread but is experiencing declines locally, mostly because of habitat loss. It is a minor component of local fisheries around Asia.
