Identification
Adults can grow to 76 cm in length. Coloration variable, from light brown to light grey-white with faint vertical bars. More or less numerous clear-edged round orange blotches on whole body, including lips. Lower two thirds of tail fin dark.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Persian Gulf to Taiwan and south China, southwards to Indonesia and north Australia. Lives around shallow banks in soft substrate areas and estuaries, from 30 to 105 m.

Status : The species has a large range but is taken in huge numbers, especially as juveniles, to be sold in fish markets in Asia for food.
