Identification
The largest butterflyfish species, growing to 30 cm in length. White body with thin vertical black lines on flanks. Thick black band from forehead through eyes to chin. Rear of back black with broad yellow edge. Yellow fins.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Red Sea and east Africa to Hawaii and Marquesas islands, north to south Japan, south to Australia. Lives in coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, to 171 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge range and still seems to be common. It is a component of local fisheries and could be impacted by its dependence on corals.
