Identification
Adults can grow to 23 cm in length for a weight of 31 g. Upperparts brown, head black with upright crest. White cheeks and chin with red spot under eyes. Underparts white with buff sides and broken collar on breast for this subspecies.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found in Southeast China and Hong Kong. Species occurs from India to south China, south to Thailand and Andaman Islands. Lives in all kinds of semi open and open habitats except forests, to 2000 m.

Status : The species is very common throughout its range and has been introduced successfully in America. Southern populations depleted by trapping.
