Identification
The species grows to 50 cm for a weight of 50 g. Red bill, long tail with broad feathers. Plumage dark blue-black with violet iridescence on tail, back, belly and breast, brown wings, black head. Subspecies with blue-green nape patch.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found on Batanta, Yapen, Waigeo islands and in western New Guinea. Species found in New Guinea and nearby islands. Lives in primary lowland and hilly forests, to 1900 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species depends on primary forests which could be a threat for its survival. So far, it remains locally common but declining overall.
